THE MADINAN WAY
The Soundness of the Basic Premises of the School of the People of Madina

This small treatise of Ibn Taymiyya, the extremely influential medieval Hanbali jurist, has an importance belied by its size since it is, in fact, an investigation into the origin and nature of the Prophetic Sunnah. In it he discusses the value of the consensus of the people of Madina and its standing as evidence. He also deals with the lawful and unlawful, food and drink, usury, acts of worship and other matters, and compares the school of the people of Madina regarding all these things with the other schools, making it clear that the Madinan school is the soundest of all of them and the closest to the Sunnah and the practice of the Salaf.

Although usually associated with hadith-based legal reasoning, in this work Ibn Taymiyya demonstrates the unquestionable authority of the practice of the people of Madina, showing how it remained indisputably the authentic expression of the Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) during the first three generations of Islam when it was definitely recorded by Imam Malik Ibn Anas. The conclusion he reaches is that: In the time of the Companions, the Followers and their followers, their school was the soundest of the schools of the people in all the lands of Islam, east and west, both in respect of its fundamental principles and its secondary rulings.

INHERITANCE IN ISLAM

One of the greatest concerns of every family is who will take care of its members after the father’s death. In many modern societies, this question is left to the desires of the one writing the will and to its subsequent legal interpretations by interested parties, lawyers, and possibly even law courts. Muslims do not face this quandary, for the Qur’an and Hadith literature contain abundant information on each family member’s share, thereby making sure that everyone receives his or her fair share.

In this short, concise account of the Islamic rules of inheritance, Fr. Abdul-Rauf provides a learned discussion of which relatives are eligible to inherit a share of the estate, which claims have priority over others, how to deal with specific special cases, and plentiful examples of how to calculate the correct shares.

THE BASIC CONCEPTS IN THE QUR’AN

In reading the Qur’an, we often come across many concepts with which we are familiar in our daily lives. These concepts are the key to an understanding of the Qur’an. Wisdom, patience, loyalty, and the favors of Allah are some of these concepts, to name a few. The majority of the aforementioned concepts are, however, used with quite different connotations in the course of our daily lives. Should those somewhat conversant with the Qur’an establish their Qur’anic standpoint on the basis of these connotations, they will surely come to have a poor grasp of its content.

That is why an accurate understanding of Qur’anic content and the meaning of these concepts is essential. It is necessary also to know the Qur’an by heart and to apply it to daily life. In this book, some concepts frequently encountered in the Qur’an are explained in the light of the relevant verses; we have endeavored to explain their hidden meanings as well as their general and special uses. Surely Allah knows best.

CONTEMPLATION - AN ISLAMIC PSYCHOSPIRITUAL STUDY

Delving into the true meaning and experience of Islamic spirituality, based on a person’s awareness and recognition of his existence and place in Creation, Malik Badri reveals the limitations and contradictions of the current prevailing schools of psychology that deny the existence of the soul and perceive humans as mere machines acting on external stimuli.

Combining the rich traditional Islamic wisdom with contemporary knowledge, the author advances a unique approach to the understanding of the human psyche and the self that gives a central position to meditation and contemplation as forms of worship in Islam. It is a book addressed to anyone who is interested in the Islamic approach towards the urgency felt by modern societies who are yearning for the rediscovery of the long-forgotten and neglected spiritual aspects of their lives.
